Hatters fall at home to Bellarmine 72-47

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team fell 72-47 to Bellarmine University, Thursday night at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (8-12, 2-5 ASUN) fell behind right after the opening tip as the Knights (12-9, 6-1) went on a 6-0 run to open the action. Christiaan Jones got the Hatters on the board with a layup at the 16:58 mark and after a Knights layup, the Hatters went on a 7-0 run to make it a 10-9 game. This was the smallest deficit that Stetson faced on the night as Bellarmine took control for the remainder of the contest, as the Knights' lead eventually ballooned to 35-18 just before the end of the half.

Out of the break, the Knights continued to control the game as the Hatters faced a growing deficit. Bellarmine led by 20 or more for much of the second half, as its largest lead hit 28 with 43 seconds left in regulation.

Chase Johnston led all Hatters scorers on the night as the sophomore put up 13 points and added two assists. Mahamadou Diawara crashed the glass all night as the junior brought down 10 boards for the Hatters.

Stetson's 28.3 field goal percentage was the first time the Hatters shot under 30 percent since shooting 19.6 percent against Florida back on Dec. 6, 2020.

Stetson's men's basketball team will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 29 as the Hatters host Eastern Kentucky at the Edmunds Center. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
