Panzo's career day powers Hatters to a 113-95 victory over EKU

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team topped Eastern Kentucky University 113-95 Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center as the Hatters tallied their highest point total of the season with five different Hatters reaching double figures.

The Hatters (9-12, 3-5 ASUN) led off the contest going 7-for-7 from the field as their first miss did not occur until the 14:26 mark with Stetson leading 18-15. After a Jannson Williams 3-pointer knotted the game at 18, the Hatters and the Colonels (10-12, 2-6) traded blows for the next 8:30 and by the 6:05 mark, the game was tied at 34 apiece. With 4:37 left in the first half, the Hatters went on an 18-3 run, highlighted by back-to-back triples from Chase Johnston, and the Hatters held a commanding 53-37 lead headed to the locker room.

Out of the break, Stetson's scoring run ballooned to a 20-3 run as Christiaan Jones connected on an unassisted layup tom open the second half. The Hatters continued to pour it on as a Giancarlo Valdez layup at the 13:10 mark gave Stetson a 79-53 lead. By the 10:10 mark, an Alvin Tumblin 3-pointer gave the Hatters an 86-57 lead, their largest of the day. Then, from the 7:07 mark to the 3:44 mark, junior Wheza Panzo tallied 11 of his 20 points with nine coming off three shots from downtown as the Hatters cruised to the 113-95 win.

Five Hatters tallied double figures as Christiaan Jones dropped a season-high 25 points to lead all scorers on the day, going 10-for-13 from the field and 4-of-5 from the stripe. Panzo went 6-for-7 from beyond the arc, a new career-high, and racked up 20 points for another career-high. Chase Johnston put up 19 points and went 5-of-10 from 3-point range while Tumblin and Josh Smith each recorded 12 points. Sophomore Giancarlo Valdez also tallied a career-high 12 dimes for the Hatters.

Stetson's 113-point performance was the first time the Hatters reached triple digits in an ASUN Conference contest since defeating Belmont University 106-95 back on Dec. 16, 2001. Saturday's contest was the first time since the 2016-17 season that Stetson scored 100 or more points against an NCAA Division I opponent as the Hatters scored 112 against The Citadel on Nov. 18, 2016.

The Stetson men's basketball team will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 3 as the Hatters travel to the Music City, Nashville, Tennessee, to take on Lipscomb University. Tip-off is set for 8:15 EST and will be streamed on ESPN+.
