Johnston, Jones lead Hatters in 77-71 victory over Bison

Nashville, Tenn. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team won its second game in a row Thursday evening as the Hatters topped Lipscomb University 77-71 at Allen Arena.

The Hatters (10-12, 4-5 ASUN) got on the board first as Stephan Swenson connected on an unassisted layup. Over the opening five minutes of action, Stetson and Lipscomb played to a back-and-forth contest and by the 12:36 mark, the Bison (10-14, 3-6) had a 16-12 lead. Shortly after, Chase Johnston hit a trey to get the Hatters within one and began a 14-0 Hatter run over the next six minutes. The Bison then went on their own 10-0 run, but Stetson held its lead and took a 31-30 advantage into the break.

After the intermission, the Hatters opened the second stanza with a 19-4 run over the first six minutes of the half, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Stephan Swenson, and took a commanding 50-34 lead with 13:50 left to play. Stetson and Lipscomb exchanged blows over the next eight minutes, but the Bison went on a 10-0 run to cut it to a two-possession game with 2:24 left in regulation. With 1:12 left, Johnston connected on his fourth trey to give the Hatters a 70-64 edge. Lipscomb then answered right away and made it a one-possession game with 11 seconds left, but Christiaan Jones sealed the Hatters win as the graduate student hit the second of his two free throws with 10 ticks remaining as teh Bison had no response this time.

Johnston led all Stetson scorers with 18 points, going 4-for-8 from beyond the arc. Jones came up clutch for the Hatters as he racked up 14 points going 10-for-11 from the stripe despite only going 2-for-14 from the field. Josh Smith tallied 10 of his own and brought down nine boards to round out the Stetson offense.

Lipscomb's Will Pruitt led all scorers on the night as the guard recorded 22 points for the Bison.

The win is only the third time that the Hatters have won back-to-back games this season and the first time this season that Stetson has defeated two Division I teams in consecutive games.

The Stetson men's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 5 as the Hatters travel to Conway, Ark. for a bout against University of Central Arkansas. Tip-off is set for 4:15 p.m. EST. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
