Hatters split doubleheader with Samford and FSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Tallahassee, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's tennis team split its doubleheader on Saturday as the Hatters topped Samford University 4-1 in the morning, but then fell 4-1 to host Florida State in the afternoon.

For the second day in a row, the Hatters (1-2) fell behind 1-0 early after Samford took 2-of-3 in doubles action.

Stetson rebounded in singles competition as the Hatters back courts swept their competition for four unanswered points. Clement Hamel played a competitive match on court three as the senior topped Samford's J.B. Pickard 6-3 in the first set and then pulled out a 7-5 win in set two. Newcomers Tristan Dumas and Ervin Haris Eminefendic each took their matches 2-0 over Will Gray and Harrison Williams, respectively. Tim Gennes cruised to a 2-0 victory against the Bulldog's Ben Kiblinger, taking his sets 6-4 and 6-2.

"We did not do a good job in doubles today. Samford was aggressive and took it to us right off the bat," said head coach Christophe Noblet. "I'm very proud of the guys the way they responded right away in singles. They really made it a team win where everyone in singles, one through six, was focusing on doing their part and helping the guy next to them to compete harder."

In Saturday's afternoon match against FSU, the Hatters began doubles action with a win as Sven Thiergard and Eminefendic topped FSU's Richard Thongoana and Bryn Nahrung 6-1.  The Seminoles (5-0) then took the second match, leaving match number three to decide the first point. Fabian Penzkofer and Gennes took Sebastian Arcila and Loris Pourroy to the end, but it was the pair from FSU that came out on top 7-6 (7-5).

In singles action, Penzkofer topped Youcef Rihane on court five to give the Hatters their only singles victory of the match and Stetson's lone point. The Hatters continued to fight hard in the rest of their matches, but came up short in the end.

"I'm proud of the team for playing FSU very tough as we played for four hours, indoors," said Noblet. "Doubles came down to one point and then in singles we played them hard on every single line and really competing for the whole time. We're going to learn from it and we're going to learn from this whole weekend and get better because of it."

The Stetson men's tennis team will return to action on Friday, Jan. 28 as the Hatters host Florida National University. First serve is set for 3 p.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
