Hatters Roll Past North Alabama 75-43

Stetson Bounces Back With Full Team Effort

Florence, Ala. -- Earlier this season, the Hatters established an identity of playing hard-nosed defense while crashing the boards and attacking the paint. Stetson got back to those successful building blocks Saturday afternoon in a dominating 75-43 ASUN road victory at North Alabama.

"It was good to see it back," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "It went away from us for awhile.  We've been consistent with that except for the last few games. We looked more like ourselves today as far as defense and rebounding. It was a good team effort."

Senior guard Yazz Wazeerud-Din also reestablished her shooting touch, going 7-for-8 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the arc for a team-high 18 points. Mali Morgan-Elliott and (14 points) and Jamiya Turner (12 points) joined Wazeerud-Din in double figures as Stetson improved to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in ASUN play.

The Hatters picked up their first-ever win at Flowers Hall and their sixth road win of the season.

"Overall, I thought we played really well," Bria said. "I loved our energy.  It was a great response from our last game. Probably our best 40-minute game of the year. To North Alabama's credit, they went on a little run and did some things in the third quarter, but I thought our defense was really good. I loved our rebounding and just the effort of the group."

After behind held scoreless from behind the arc against FGCU Wednesday, the Hatters came out firing Saturday, hitting a season-best 11 3-pointers on 20 attempts for a .550 3-point shooting percentage. Wazeerud-Din led the way with four triples, while Khamya McNeal and Morgan-Elliott each knocked down three 3s apiece.

"I think we shared the ball really well and worked together as a team," Morgan-Elliott said. "We had great effort. If people weren't scoring, they were definitely rebounding and getting those extra hustle plays."

Stetson also dominated inside the paint, outscoring UNA 28-12 down low and owning a 47-28 advantage on the glass.  Ayanna Dublin celebrated her birthday with a season-high 11-rebound performance.

The Hatters did a good job taking care of the basketball as well, committing just 12 turnovers which led to only four UNA points.

Stetson outshot North Alabama .456 to .260.  The Hatters held the Lions to just four field goals in the first half and just 13 field goals for the game. Julia Strachan led UNA (7-9, 2-2) with nine points.

The Hatters will return home to face Bellarmine at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Notes:
