Hatters Win Third Straight, Down EKU 70-52

Yazz Wazeerud-Din, Jamiya Turner lead the way

DeLand, Fla. -- Yazz Wazeerud-Din scored a season-high 23 points and Jamiya Turner recorded her first double-double of the season as Stetson rolled to a 70-52 victory over Eastern Kentucky Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters led wire-to-wire to win their third in a row and improve to 11-10 overall and 4-4 in ASUN play.

"I thought we played really well," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I thought our effort was outstanding today. Eastern Kentucky is a very good team; they have a lot of weapons.  I felt like we played together, and I really liked our defense.  I was really pleased with our effort."

Stetson shot 62 percent and scored 26 points in the first quarter and never looked back.  The Hatters led by 12 at the break and by 14 in the third until EKU rallied to within eight late in the period.

Tatiana Streun hit a pair of 3s, one at the tail end of the third quarter and another to open the fourth to help Stetson regain a 14-point cushion.  The Hatters held the Colonels to just eight points in the final frame to secure the 18-point victory.

Not only have the Hatters won three straight in conference play for the first time in two seasons, they have outscored their opponents by 61 points during this stretch.

"It's crazy," Turner said.  "Everybody is excited. Everybody is ready to get another one."

Fresh off a career-high 15-rebound performance against Bellarmine, Turner contributed 13 points and 13 rebounds Saturday afternoon, and she also played a key role and helping Stetson break the EKU press.

"It's very hard to press us with Jamiya back there," Bria said.  "Having someone who can see and handle the ball, make good decisions, it makes us a hard team to press. Eastern's pressed a lot of teams. They press, they turn you over. I am really proud of the way we took care of the ball."

Wazeerud-Din, meanwhile, went 9-for-19 from the floor and hit four 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 23 points. Alyssa Hargrove netted 12 points for her second straight game in double figures. Kiya Turner dished out a career-high nine assists.

"We were aggressive," Bria said.  "We really attacked and got good shots. We attacked the paint and kicked it our for 3s."

The Hatters also played tough on defense and on the glass. Stetson outrebounded EKU 46-31 and held the Colonels (10-11, 3-5) to 33 percent shooting. Emma Hacker led EKU with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Up next, Stetson will begin a two-game road swing at Lipscomb on Thursday night.

Notes:
  • Stetson shot 79 percent from the free throw line (15-for-19)
