Hatters Down UNF 73-62 For First ASUN Win

Tatiana Streun leads the way with a season-high 24 points

Jacksonville, Fla. -- Tatiana Streun scored a season-high 24 points and pulled down seven rebounds as Stetson notched a 73-62 road victory over North Florida Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena.

Kiya Turner added 15 points and four steals for the Hatters (8-7, 1-1 ASUN), who picked up their first conference victory of the season.

"I thought overall we played a good game," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "We came out really strong in the first half. I thought the third quarter got us a little bit. (UNF) came out really ready to go. North Florida is a good team, they are going to do that, but I thought we responded once we settled down a little bit.

"It's a good win for us," Bria added. "To come in and get a win on the road, it's a really good win for us."

Stetson bounced back from Wednesday's home loss to Liberty in a big way, outscoring the Ospreys (7-7, 0-2) 24-5 in the second quarter.

"I just think we played with a lot more energy," Bria said. "Our effort was so much better. Our communication was probably the best game we've ever had. The effort and the communication - those are two things that we can really control. As long as we have that, I am going to be a pretty happy coach."

Streun, a 6-0 forward, showed off some range by stepping out and knocking down a career-high four 3-pointers during the first half.  She scored nine points in the first quarter and 10 more in the second to spot the Hatters to a 39-19 halftime lead.

UNF opened the third quarter on a 14-0 run, cutting the Hatters' lead to six.  Khamya McNeal's short jumper ended that run, and the Hatters held UNF to one field goal the rest of the period to lead 51-37 after 3.

The Ospreys closed the gap to single digits several times in the fourth quarter, but each time the Hatters responded.  Turner scored on a fastbreak layup with 7:17 to go, Alyssa Hargrove converted a tough three-point play with 5:19 left, and Ayanna Dublin scored in the low post with 2:51 remaining.  The Hatters hit 11-of-12 free throws down the stretch to nail down their fifth road victory of the season.

"Tatiana carried us in the first half," Bria said. "I thought Ayanna did a really good job in the second half defensively for us and rebounding for us. Tatiana really had a great game, probably her best game that I've seen. She really did a great job."

Streun finished 8-for-15 from the floor and 4-for-7 from the arc in 32 minutes of action.

Jaida Bond scored 17 points to lead the Ospreys. Jazz Bond scored just two points in 11+ minutes of action.

The Hatters outshot the Ospreys .436 to .345 and outrebounded UNF 35-33.

Stetson will return to Jacksonville Wednesday night to face the Dolphins. Tip-off at Swisher Gym is set for 7 p.m.
