Game Recap: Volleyball |

Stetson Volleyball struggles early, falls to Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Hatter Volleyball could not overcome an early blitz by Jacksonville State and fell, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in the Pete Matthews Coliseum.

"They [JSU] played really well, they're a mature team with aggressive serves that prevented us from passing well," head coach Yang Deng said "We couldn't fight through their experience as they made it tough for us to play our game with strong attacks. We just have to take the lessons today and move on. We had some good offense from a couple players, but two producing is not good enough, has to be a full team."

The Gamecocks stormed out of the gates taking eight points from the first 10 serves. That was only half the early damage as JSU pushed the advantage to 15-4 before the Hatters could find another point. The Hatters put together a run, but by that time, the deficit was too big to overcome as Jacksonville State took the first set, 25-14.

SU appeared to have figured out the Gamecocks in the second set as the sides bounced attacks off each other with eight ties in the first 22 serves, but with the match deadlocked at 11, JSU seized all the momentum and produced a 14-3 run to take the second set, 25-14.

The third set was a mix of the two previous with the Hatters battling but slowly falling behind before the Gamecocks closed out the match, 25-20.

Nyah Molina notched another double-double [25 assists, 13 digs] her 14th of the year and 37th career markers. Sophia Groom notched a team-high nine kills on 17 attacks [.353 hit percentage] with a pair of blocks.

Stetson has a hectic week scheduled with the match at Florida Gulf Coast scheduled for Wednesday with Bellarmine and Eastern Kentucky playing in the Edmunds Center on Friday and Saturday night, respectively. All matches are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
