Hatters fall in OT 89-82 to FGCU

Fort Myers, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team fell 89-82 in overtime to Florida Gulf Coast Saturday afternoon at Alico Arena in the Hatters first ASUN East Division rematch of the season. 
 
FGCU got out to an early lead and by the 15:44 mark, the Eagles had a 15-0 advantage. Over the next 11 minutes, the Hatters (11-14, 5-7 ASUN) battled back and with 4:19 left in the first half, Chase Johnston drained a 3-point field goal to make it a one possession game at 30-28. With a minute and a half left before the break, a Stephan Swenson layup and a free throw from Aubin Gateretse knotted the game at 36 apiece. 
 
After the intermission, less than two minutes into the second stanza, a Johnston jumper gave the Hatters their first lead of the day, 40-38. By the 16:32 mark, Stetson had a seven-point lead at 47-40 but with 11:34 left in regulation, the Eagles' Tavian Dunn-Martin hit a trey to tie the game at 53. After maintaining a one or two-possession lead for almost six minutes, the Hatters began to pull away and took an 11-point lead with 2:55 left in regulation. Stetson's lead did not last as the Eagles (17-9, 7-5) battled back and forced overtime after Dunn-Martin tied the game at 76-all.
 
In overtime, FGCU held the Hatters to just six points after the teams matched each other in both halves of regulation and ultimately took the first ASUN East Division rematch. 
 
Johnston matched his career-high with 24 points, also giving him a new season-high as the sophomore went 5-for-10 from beyond the arc. In Saturday's contest,the Boca Raton native set a new single-season record for made 3-pointers with 83 and counting as the Hatters have four games remaining. Stephan Swenson recorded 14 points for his fourth double-digit game of the year.
 
Tavian Dunn-Martin led all scorers on the night as the FGCU guard put up 38 points, shooting 13-of-25 from the field. 
 
The Stetson men's basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 16 as the Hatters return home to host Jacksonville University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
