Hatters Upset 20th-Ranked FGCU 58-55

Lynn Bria Wins Her 400th Career Game

Fort Myers, Fla. -- What a night for the Stetson Hatters.

Head coach Lynn Bria won her 400th career game as Stetson upset 20th-ranked FGCU 58-55 Saturday evening at Alico Arena. The Hatters (15-10, 8-4 ASUN) won their seventh in a row while snapping FGCU's NCAA-leading 15-game overall win streak and 33-game conference win streak.

"First, I just want to thank God for the place He has us," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "It's a great feeling.  The thing about Florida Gulf Coast is they are hard to beat here.  I certainly have a lot of respect for Karl and the program.  It's a great win for us.  I am just proud of our team."

Stetson trailed 46-40 entering the fourth quarter but outscored the Eagles (22-2, 11-1 ASUN) 18-9 in the final frame to post their first-ever victory over a Top 25 opponent.

"I am proud of our fight today," Bria said.  "This team has a fight to them that's really, really fun to watch. It's a huge win for us."

On Jan. 19, FGCU defeated Stetson by 37 points at the Edmunds Center.  Less than four weeks later, the Hatters turned the tables.

"I'm ecstatic," senior Ayanna Dublin said.  "We came in and said the past doesn't define us. We are a whole new team now, and we still have a lot more playing to do."

Yazz Wazeerud-Din led the way with 15 points while Kiya Turner. added 14 points and 11 rebounds.  It was Stetson's second straight win over a first-place team.

Tatiana Streun got the Hatters going in the fourth quarter with a corner 3, and Alyssa Hargrove followed with a coast-to-coast bucket to pull the Hatters within one.  Wazeerud-Din's 3-point play put Stetson up by 2 with 5:25 to play.

The Eagles scored the next five points to retake a 3-point lead, but that's when Turner went to work.  The Hatter junior scored six straight points, including back-to-back layups to give Stetson a 56-53 lead with 1:01 remaining.

After Karli Seay brought FGCU back within one, Tatiana Streun made a nice move in the post and banked in a short jumper to put Stetson ahead by three.  FGCU had one last chance to tie, but Emma List's attempt at the buzzer was off the mark and the Hatters' celebration was on.

FGCU had not lost since falling to Princeton on Dec. 1, and the Eagles last conference loss came on Feb. 29, 2019 to North Alabama.

Stetson has its longest win streak since winning 15 straight in the 2016-17 season.  The Hatters will go for their eighth in a row Thursday night against Jacksonville.
