Hatters drop two against UNC, Ohio State on second day of The Spring Games

Leesburg, Fla. -- The Stetson University softball team fell to both UNC and Ohio State Saturday afternoon as the Hatters dropped a 3-1 contest to the Tarheels in their first game of the day and then 10-2 to the Buckeyes in game two on the second day of the annual Spring Games.

In game of the day, the Hatters (5-4) fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the second after UNC's Katie Perkins drove a two-run triple to right field plating Skyler Brooks and Taylor Greene. In the third, Stetson responded with a two-out RBI-single to center off the bat of Brianna Clary to cut the deficit in half.

In the home half of the fourth, the Tarheels (6-3) got an insurance run as Perkins plated Brooks for a second time as UNC took a 3-1 lead.

The final three innings were a pitchers duel as neither UNC's Hannah George nor Stetson's Lauren Hobbs surrendered a run after the fourth inning. George earned her fourth win for the Tarheels and senior Jaime Tino was tagged for the loss as she went four innings and allowed three runs on three hits and punched out three.

In Stetson's second game of the day, the Buckeyes (6-1) took a 5-0 lead in the second inning on back-to-back RBI knocks and then a two-run homer from Meggie Otte for the fourth and fifth runs of the inning.

The Hatters cut into the Ohio State lead with single runs in both the third and fourth innings as Marissa Baxter drove in Juls Schumacher after she led off the third with a double and then a Buckeyes miscue led to Brianna Clary crossing the plate in the fourth to make it a 5-2 Hatters deficit. It was not enough as the Buckeyes scored five unanswered runs over the final three innings, handing the Hatters their second loss of the day.

The Stetson softball team will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 20 for the third day of The Spring Games as the Hatters take on Hofstra and Monmouth. First pitch against Hofstra is set for 9 a.m. and will be streamed on Flosoftball.
