Hatters Power Past Central Arkansas For Fifth Straight Win

Stetson shoots 58 percent in the second half to complete weekend sweep

Conway, Ark. -- Behind a dominant second-half performance, Stetson extended its win streak to five in a row with a 63-45 victory over Central Arkansas Saturday afternoon at the Farris Center.

With the victory, the Hatters (13-10, 6-4 ASUN) completed a weekend road sweep and moved into sole possession of third place in the ASUN East Division.

Much like Thursday's win at Lipscomb, Stetson took over in the third quarter Saturday, outscoring the Sugar Bears 23-5 for the period.  That included a 16-0 Hatter run to break the game open. Stetson cranked up the defensive pressure, forcing Central Arkansas into 12 second half turnovers that led to 22 Hatter points.

For the game, Yazz Wazeerud-Din led three Hatters in double figures with 18 points, adding six steals to bring her league-leading total to 50 on the season.

Tatiana Streun knocked down four triples and scored 14 points, while Jamiya Turner registered 13 points and six rebounds.  Kiya Turner dished out a team high six assists.

Stetson shot just 32 percent in the first half, but Alyssa Hargrove's corner 3 late in closing seconds of the second quarter the Hatters some momentum going into the break.

Stetson got going early in the third and took the lead on Jamiya Turner's coast-to-coast basket.  It was the first time the Hatters saw a second-half lead change in conference play this season.

After two UCA free throws tied the game at 28, the Hatters held the Sugar Bears scoreless over the next five-and-a-half minutes.  Tippy Robertson and Streun each hit three-pointers during Stetson's 16-0 run.  The Hatters led 44-29 after 3 and pushed the lead up to 20 in the fourth. Stetson shot 59 percent from the floor in the second half of play en route to the victory.

Carley Hudspeth led the Sugar Bears (8-13, 3-7) with nine points. It was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

The Hatters will return home Wednesday night to face the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. Tip-off at the Edmunds Center is set for 5 p.m.  It will be the first of two straight games against ASUN Division Leaders.
