Hargrove Scores 19 as Hatters Best Jacksonville State 70-66

Stetson Wins Its Sixth in a Row

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson completed a clean sweep of the ASUN West Division after knocking off first-place Jacksonville State 70-66 Wednesday evening at the Edmunds Center.

Freshman Alyssa Hargrove scored a game-high 19 points and Jamiya Turner added 14 as the Hatters (14-10, 7-4 ASUN) rallied to win their sixth game in a row.

"I was really proud of our kids' fight," said Stetson head coach Lynn Bria, who posted her 399th career victory.  "They just fought hard.  They never threw in the towel.  They kept fighting and stayed in the moment."

Stetson led by two at the break and by five midway through the third period when a 14-2 JSU run flipped the scoreboard and put Gamecocks up by seven. The Hatters battled back behind a late triple from Hargrove to trail by just two after 3.

Khamya McNeal scored the first five points in the fourth quarter as the Hatters took the lead for good.  Stetson extended the lead to nine on two occassions before the Gamecocks rallied to within two with 2:15 to go.  Hargrove and Kiya Turner each knocked down a pair of free throws and Yazz Wazeerud-Din picked up a big steal down the stretch to help Stetson seal the victory.

"We are so happy. That was a big win for us," Hargrove said.

Hargrove went 7-for-14 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the arc. She scored 10 points in the third quarter alone to keep Stetson in the game.

"I thought Alyssa had the best game she's had," Bria said. "She really carried us the entire game. She played like a veteran today."

Jamiya Turner recorded 14 points and nine rebounds to go along with a pair of charges drawn.  Tatiana Streun, McNeal and Wazeerud-Din chipped in 10 points apiece.

Shawnta Shaw scored 16 points for JSU (17-6, 8-3).

The two former ASUN rivals met as conference opponents for the first time since 2002.  The Hatters improved to 8-0 all-time vs. the Gamecocks at the Edmunds Center.

Stetson will travel to Fort Myers Saturday for a showdown with No. 20 FGCU. The Eagles have won an NCAA-leading 15 games in a row.

Notes:
  • Stetson has tied its longest winning steak since the 2018-19 season (6)
  • The Hatters have outscored opponents by 94 points (15.7 ppg) during the six-game win streak
