Hatters win fifth straight, remain undefeated

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University women's tennis team won its fifth straight game and remained undefeated on the season Saturday afternoon as the Hatters topped Troy University 4-2 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

Stetson got out to a fast start in doubles action as freshman Cheri Darley and sophomore Nadejda Maslova topped Troy's Hagar Amin and Olivia Elliott 6-0 in the opening match. Troy took the point from doubles action as the Trojans (1-1) took the other two matches and went into singles play with a 1-0 edge.

In singles action, Noa Cohen tied the match at 1-1 as she picked up a pair of 6-1 wins over Andrea Widing. Senior Anais Gabriel continued the Hatters success on the day as she downed Michelle Ncube 6-3 and 6-4 in two sets. The Trojans then knotted the match at 2 apiece after Darley fell to Kristina Kukaras 6-1 and 6-4. Then on court one, Maslova won a hard-fought match over Anastasia Khokhlova to put the Hatters ahead for good, 3-2. On court five, freshman Alanna DiFrancesco sealed the win for Stetson as she cruised to a 2-0 win over Hagar Amin.

"Troy played well today. They put us under some good pressure," said Hatters head coach Travis Sandlant. "The girls responded well with a hard-fought win."

Stetson's women's tennis team will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 9 as the Hatters visit Bethune-Cookman University for a mid-week match. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
