Hatters Run Win Streak to Six By Downing Maine

Stetson ran it's win streak to six straight games and handed its head coach a victory over his former team Monday afternoon, downing Maine 9-3 at Melching Field.

The Hatters received contributions from every part of the lineup as all nine starters reached base safely. Stetson improved to 11-5 on the year with the win while dropping the visiting Black Bears to 3-10.

Freshman Dominic Stagliano (2-0) started on the mound and picked up the win for Stetson. The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, all earned, on seven hits. He allowed one walk and struck out four. Freshman Cooper Smith worked three scoreless innings in relief and Tanner Martin closed things out in the ninth.

At the plate, the Hatters were led by sophomore Jakob Bullard, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a triple, a walk and three RBI. It was Bullard's first career triple in the second inning that drove in a pair of runs to give Stetson its first lead. He was then able to slide around a tag attempt by Maine catcher Ryan Turenne on a ground ball to push the lead to 3-0.

The Black Bears answered right back in the top of the third, getting four consecutive hits to open the inning, with a trip by freshman Jeremiah Jenkins driving in two runs. Jenkins scored on a single by Quinn McDaniel to tie the game. The Bears never really threatened again until the ninth inning, loading the bases with two out before Martin got a strikeout to end the game.

The Hatters had a big inning in the fifth, scoring five runs on just three hits. Four of the runs came after a Maine error opened the door. Cam Hill doubled to open the inning and then scored on a ground ball on the infield. Bullard had an RBI single and Christian Pregent had a run-scoring double. Pregent had a pair of doubles in the game and drove in two runs while Hill also had two hits.

Tuesday's second, and final, game against Maine, which was originally scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start, has been moved up to start at 3:30 p.m. in hopes of getting the game in before evening thunderstorms begin rolling in. Junior Danny Garcia will take to the mound in the game for Stetson.
