Stetson splits Saturday doubleheader against Bellarmine

Lauren Hobbs pitches Hatters to 4-0 victory in Game 2

DELAND, Fla. - After dropping the first of a three-game ASUN series against Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field, the Stetson University softball team saw reigning league Pitcher of the Week Lauren Hobbs toss her first career complete-game shutout in Game 2 to help the Hatters split the doubleheader with the Knights, losing 3-1 in the first, but winning the second, 4-0.

Hobbs (4-6) scattered five hits and four walks over seven frames and struck out two. With the Hatters leading 3-0 after three, Hobbs faced her only real test in the top of the fourth, when the Knights loaded the bases with one out on a single and back-to-back walks. However, she induced a grounder to Danielle Diaz at third, who came home for out number two, and then ended the threat with a foul out to catcher Jordyn Stanfill.

No Knight would touch second base the rest of the game as Hobbs recorded the first shutout by a Stetson pitcher in a conference game since April 13, 2019 when Tori Perkins led the Hatters to a 1-0 win over Kennesaw State.

Stetson (13-20, 3-2 ASUN) gave Hobbs an early lead in the game when Brianna Clary scored in the first off an error and back-to-back RBI singles by Haley Fox and Stanfill in the third gave the home squad that three-run cushion. Clary would cross the plate again in the fourth off a Diaz sac fly to finish off the Hatters scoring.

Bellarmine (9-22, 1-4 ASUN) used a two-run home run by Hannah Webb in the fifth inning of Game 1 to break a 1-1 tie and held on for the victory. Carson Goatley (4-5) went the distance for the Knights to pick up the win.

The Hatters collected eight hits in the first game, as Diaz led the team with three, who also went over the 100-hit milestone in the effort, and scored the lone run. Stetson actually had the tying runs on base in the seventh, on one-out singles by Clary and Diaz, but the team could not drive them home.

The rubber match between the two teams is set for Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 pm. The game can be viewed on ESPN+ or can be followed along through live stats. Links are provided on the Hatters' 2022 schedule page.
