Baxter, Shubert power Stetson past Bellarmine for ASUN series win

Marissa Baxter drives in four, Lizzie Shubert three in 9-1 victory on Sunday

DELAND, Fla. - Marissa Baxter drove in a career-high four runs, while Lizzie Shubert hit a two-run home run and had three total RBI to lead the Stetson University softball team to a 9-1 victory over Bellarmine on Sunday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field to claim its second straight ASUN series to start the season.

Baxter capped a six-run, fourth inning with a bases-clearing double to center and then ended the game in the sixth with another RBI double to right center. Shubert gave the Hatters a two-run lead in the third with her 25th career home run and contributed in the fourth-inning rally with a sacrifice fly.

Every starter for the Hatters reached base, as they tallied seven hits, seven walks and were hit by one pitch. Only Baxter had a multi-hit game, her fifth of the year, while Danielle Diaz crossed the plate twice after drawing a pair of walks.

In the circle, Lauren Hobbs improved to 5-6 on the season with her fifth straight complete game. She scattered six hits over six innings, struck out five and did not walk a batter. The lone run scored by the Knights in the fourth was unearned.

Stetson (14-20, 4-2 ASUN) has now won more league games than last year (3) and matches the totals for the 2017 and 2018 seasons - in 2019 the team won five conference games. The Hatters have also won back-to-back ASUN weekends to start the season for the first time since 2015, when the squad opened league play at 5-1.

The Hatters have the midweek off, then return to action this weekend when they head to Richmond, Kentucky for a three-game ASUN series at Eastern Kentucky. The set begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, first pitch at 1 pm.
