Stetson gets back on track with comeback win over Kennesaw State

After dropping the doubles' point, four Hatters rattle off straight-set victories in 5-2 win

DELAND - Fla. - For the second consecutive match, the Stetson University women's tennis team lost the doubles' point to start the day. However this time, the Hatters responded by winning the first four singles matches, all in straight sets, to hand visiting Kennesaw State a 5-2 defeat in ASUN action, Sunday afternoon at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

The win improved the Stetson record to 14-2 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Hatters also won their 11th match of the season at home, opposed to just one loss. The 2022 Hatters have now posted the second-best record over the first 16 matches in team history, only bettered by the 2011 team that was 15-1 at the same point of the season. The 11 home wins are tied for the second-most over the past 17 seasons, with the 2015 squad posting the best at 12-2.

No. 3 doubles pair Anais Gabriel and Noa Cohen took their flight, 6-1, winning their eighth straight match and improving to 9-1 on the season, but Kennesaw State (11-4, 1-3 ASUN) took flights 1 and 2 to earn the point.

Elodie Foster was the first Hatter to put a point on the board, winning her No. 6 singles match, 6-3, 6-3, while Cohen continued her unbeaten season with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5. Foster is 9-3, while Cohen is 14-0, which is tied for the sixth-best win streak in school history.

Gabriel then finished off her opponent at flight 2, 6-4, 6-4, and Alanna DiFrancesco, who is now 14-1, completed the comeback and secured the win with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory at No. 4. Cheri Darley would win her 10th straight and improve to 13-1 with a three-set 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3.

"We showed some great character today," Stetson head coach Travis Sandlant said. "That's what we are all about and trying to build. We were up against it for sure. We have had sickness run through us this whole week. So, to hang tough today and come out with a gutsy win showed great heart."

Stetson is off during the week, but returns to ASUN action this weekend on the road. The Hatters play at Lipscomb on Friday (April 1) and Jacksonville State on Sunday (April 3) with both matches beginning at 1 pm.
