NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Stetson University women's tennis team captured its 15th win of the 2022 season as the Hatters defeated Lipscomb by a 4-1 count at Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center Friday afternoon in ASUN league action.
Stetson improved to 15-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The 15 wins in 17 matches ties the school record for the best start after 17 matches with the 2011 squad, who also holds the mark after 18 matches as well at 16-2. The 15 wins are also tied for the 10th most in a single-season at the school. Lipscomb fell to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in the ASUN.
The Hatters won the doubles point to start the day, with
Nadejda Maslova and
Cheri Darley taking flight 2, 6-2, which improved their pairs record to 10-4.
Alanna DiFrancesco and
Elodie Foster secured the point with a 7-5 win at flight 1.
Anais Gabriel and
Noa Cohen, who are 9-1 together, were leading their match at flight 3, 6-5, before it went unfinished.
Cohen, who has yet to lose a singles match this season, improved to 15-0 with her straight set win at flight 5. She is now tied with Alize Michaud (2015) and Diana Bukajeva (2012-13) for the fourth longest winning streak in program history.
Darley (No. 3) and DiFrancesco (No. 4), who have both lost just once this season, went on to win their respective flights to seal the win for the Hatters. Darley had to rebound after dropping the first set to register her 14th win of the year, while DiFrancesco won easily in straight sets for her 15th. Those three players have helped Stetson post a remarkable 33-1 mark at flights 3-5 during the season.
The Hatters will look to continue their winning ways when they return to the court on Sunday at Jacksonville State. The match is slated for an 11 am start.
