Hatters cannot overcome early Wildcat lead

Haley Fox had two hits and stole two bases in the loss

DELAND, Fla. - The Stetson University softball team could not overcome an early Bethune-Cookman lead and suffered a 4-1 loss to the Wildcats in the final game of the 2022 Stetson Invitational at Patricia Wilson Field on Sunday afternoon.

Bethune-Cookman used a three-run home run by Ciera Clark to cap a four-run top of the first inning.

The Hatters responded with their lone run of the game in the home half, when Lizzie Shubert singled home Evette Morgan, who was one of three Hatters with a pair of hits in the game.

Haley Fox and Alyssa Gilman each also went 2-for-3 in the contest, while Fox also stole a pair of bases and is now a perfect 9-for-9 on the season. However, Stetson, who outhit the Wildcats 7-2, stranded seven runners on base, including five in scoring position.

In the circle, Marissa Baxter came in from the bullpen and was lights out, tossing 6.1 scoreless innings without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out three.

Stetson (9-12) returns to the field on Wednesday with a doubleheader at nationally-ranked South Florida (17-3). First pitch of the day at USF Softball Stadium is set for 5 p.m.
