DELAND, Fla. - The Stetson University men's tennis team closed out its 2022 home slate with a 7-0 victory over North Alabama on Sunday afternoon at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. It was the Hatters' third straight ASUN win and sent off their six seniors in winning fashion.
The Hatters dominated the Lions from the start, taking the doubles point with 6-1 wins at both at flight 2 and 3.
Ervin Eminefendic and
Sven Thiergard improved to a team best 8-4 on Court 2, while
Josh Laka and
Tim Gennes won three straight at No. 3 doubles. At flight 1,
Diogo Marques and
Clement Hamel were looking for their fifth straight win, and were leading 5-2 before it went unfinished.
Stetson continued to roll in the singles, winning all six matches in straight sets. Gennes (No. 5) and
Fabian Penzkofer (No. 4) were first to finish with Gennes losing just one game (6-0, 6-1) to improve to 11-4, while Penzkofer (6-3) did not drop one (6-0, 6-0). Eminefendic sealed the win at flight 2 with his 6-4, 6-1 win to get his ninth victory of the year, and
Tristan Dumas earned a 6-3, 6-2 win on Court 1, his first at the flight.
Sami Ozzor, now 9-1, earned a tough 7-5, 6-4 victory on Court 6, just before Thiergard (4-3) won his match 6-2, 6-4 on Court 3.
"It was a dominating performance today from the Hatters on Senior day," Stetson head men's tennis coach
Christophe Noblet said. "This was a great way to celebrate our six seniors as they played their last match at Mandy Stoll."
Those six seniors honored prematch included Gennes, Laka, Penzkofer, Marques, Hamel and
Dennis Moses.
Stetson (10-8, 3-3 ASUN)Â will finish out the regular season with matches at Bellarmine on Thursday starting at 2 pm and at Liberty on Saturday with a 3 pm start. The Hatters are inching closer to clinching a spot in the ASUN Championship, needing just one more win.
