Hatters tie school record with 18th win of the year

Stetson shuts out North Alabama 7-0 on Senior Day

DELAND, Fla. - On Senior Day at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center, the Stetson University women's tennis team sent its two seniors out with a historic victory. In the Hatters' final home match of 2022, they shut out North Alabama, 7-0, to tie the school record for wins in a season with 18 and set the school record for home wins in a season with 13.

Stetson is now 18-2 this season and improved to 6-1 in the ASUN, moving into a four-way tie for first place in the league standings with Liberty, North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast with one week left in the regular season.

Not only was the team win historic, but Noa Cohen put herself in the school record book in both singles and doubles. Her win at flight three with teammate Anais Gabriel, which clinched the doubles' point, was the pairs' 10th straight win. That streak is tied for the second-longest ever at the school with three other pairs and is one shy of tying the all-time record of 11 set by Valentina Galbarini and Unnati Purushotham in 2008.

Cohen was one of four Hatters to win in straight sets and her win at flight 5 improved her record to 18-0 this season and she is unbeaten in her last 20 matches dating back to last season. That streak ties for the third longest ever in program history with Mandy Stoll (1986) with Purushotham's 21 (2010-11) straight  victories next on the list. Taryn Lynn (1998-99) holds the record at 47 straight.

Other straight set winners included Cheri Darley at flight 3, who won her 14th straight match, tying her for the seventh longest streak at the school with Galbarini (2009). She is 17-1 this season, while Alanna DiFrancesco improved to 18-1 with her victory at flight 4. At flight 6, Anna Dovgopolyi, one of Stetson's two seniors, earned her third win of the year with her victory.

"It was a great day for our seniors," Stetson head women's tennis coach Travis Sandlant said. "Anna and Olivia have been good team members of this program. It was also awesome that Anna got a win today."

Winning in three sets were Hatters Nadejda Maslova at flight 1, who lost the first set, 1-6, but fought back to win the final two, 6-1, 6-2, to get her 11th win of the year. Last on the court was Gabriel, who won her third set tiebreak 10-8 to get her 12th win of the season and complete the shutout.

Stetson will finish out the regular season with matches at Bellarmine on Thursday starting at 10 am and at Liberty on Saturday with an 11 am start. The Hatters have already clinched a spot in the ASUN Championship, but seedings have yet to be secured.

Stetson honored its two seniors prior to today's match - Dovgopolyi and Olivia Talbert.
Dovgopolyi serves as the Council's Chairperson for all major social media campaigns that touch a wide variety of societal issues on behalf of Hatter's athletics. As member of the University's  prestigious Student Athlete Advisory Council, she has shown leadership ability with her strong work ethic, communication skills with athletic department administrators and a dedication to achieving success. She is also the Co-Founder of a fundraising charity in Brazil to benefit and mentor underprivileged children. As a Business Administration major, with a minor in Sports Business and Marketing, she has been a member of Stetson University's Honor Roll in five of her previous seven semesters, while also finding time to obtain a Florida Real Estate license.

Talbert served as a volunteer for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee contributing essential problem solving abilities as well as feedback analysis and solutions for success. As a Communications and Media Studies major, she has earned honor roll status in each of her four years at Stetson, while being named to the Dean's List in the Fall semester of 2020. She was also placed on the Academic Honor Roll, the A-SUN Conference Honor Roll and the ITA Honor Roll in all four of her college years. Talbert's varied abilities reach far beyond the tennis courts and classroom as she has also been a prevalent and productive intern for the Sportsmen's Tennis and Enrichment Center in Boston.
