Hatters Head To Gainesville to Wrestle With Gators

The Stetson baseball team will continue its longest stretch of road games during the 2022 season on Tuesday night when the Hatters travel to face the Florida Gators.

The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at the new Florida Ballpark. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network+ with Jeff Cordozo and Nick Belmonte calling the action.

Both the Hatters (18-17) and Gators (22-14) are both coming off tough conference road series that saw the teams lose two of three games over the weekend.

Stetson struggled offensively against Jacksonville, getting shutout 2-0 in the second game of the series before dropping the finale 5-4. The Hatters hit just .202 in the three games against the Dolphins and left 20 runners on base in the series.

Florida dropped two of three games at Vanderbilt, falling 5-4 and 8-6 before taking a 4-3 victory on Sunday in the series finale. Despite the low scoring games, Florida hit seven homers over the weekend.

The Hatters will send sophomore left-hander Jonathan Gonzalez (3-5, 5.24) going to the mound as Stetson looks to split the season with Florida. The Gators took the opening game between the teams back in February 8-1.

Florida is expected to have freshman right-hander Karl Hartman (0-0, 9.26) on the mound for his first start. He has made nine relief appearances this year and has thrown just 11.2 total innings. He pitched in the first game this year, allowing the only Stetson run on a hit and three walks.

That was the first of seven games so far this year in which the Hatters have managed less than five hits in a game.

Stetson does not have a win in Gainesville, not counting the 2016 game that was canceled with the Hatters leading 10-1 in the fifth inning, since 2006.  Florida has a 43-30 overall advantage over the Hatters in games played outside of DeLand, including a 3-2 record in neutral site games.

In the three games at the new Florida Ballpark last year the Hatters had some offensive success, even if the games didn't go their way. Some of the highlight from those games included:
  • Brandon Hylton became the first opposing player to hit multiple home runs in the facility.
  • Hylton was joined by Andrew MacNeil and Hernen Sardinas who both had two-homer games. Sardinas had 3 HR in total.
  • As a team, the Hatters hit eight home runs in the three games.
  • Hylton and Banks Griffith led Stetson with five hits each over the three games and Christian Pregent had four.

Following the game at Florida, the Hatters will travel to south Florida this weekend for a three-game ASUN series at FGCU before closing the long stretch of road games next Tuesday night in Coral Gables against Miami.
