FORT MYERS, Fla. -- For the second time this year, the Stetson Hatters were not able to solve FGCU senior right-hander Tyler Shuck, getting shut out 4-0 by the Eagles on Saturday in the second game of the weekend series at Swanson Stadium.
The Hatters managed just two base-runners in the game, both in the second inning, on a walk and a two-out single by Kyle Ball. Shuck (5-3) retired the next 22 Stetson hitters for a complete-game, one-hit shutout. It is the first time a Stetson team has been held to one hit in a game since April 17, 2018, at Florida State.
That Stetson team rebounded from that loss to win 18 consecutive games to finish the season, winning an ASUN title and an NCAA Regional Championship along the way.
Shuck also threw 6.2 shutout innings against the Hatters back on March 19 at Melching Field.
Senior Chris Gonzalez (0-3) got the ball to start for Stetson (18-20, 5-12) and took the loss. FGCU (25-14, 10-7) jumped on Gonzalez in the first inning, scoring four runs on five hits. The Hatters' veteran left-hander rebounded from that rocky start to hold the Eagles scoreless on just one hit over the next five innings to give his team a chance.
Freshman Dominic Stagliano pitched the final 1.2 innings for Stetson without allowing a base-runner.
The Hatters will attempt to salvage the final game of the season series on Sunday. That game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
