JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Stetson University men's tennis team won its second straight ASUN match on Sunday afternoon as the Hatters defeated Jacksonville State, 4-3, at the JSU Tennis Courts and put themselves back in the hunt to advance to the ASUN Championship.
Two Hatters earned a pair of wins,
Diogo Marques and
Tim Gennes. Diogo teamed with
Clement Hamel at No. 1 doubles and picked up a 6-4 win, their fourth straight as a pair. He then went on to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles to improve to 8-7 on the season.
Gennes and
Josh Laka secured the doubles' point for Stetson with their 6-4 win at flight 3 before Gennes took his No. 5 singles opponent down 6-3, 6-0 to give Stetson a 3-0 lead in the match. With the win, Gennes is now 8-1 at flight 5 and is 10-4 overall, the first Hatter to reach the 10-win mark.
At flight 6,
Sami Ozzor clinched the team win with his 6-2, 6-4 win and with it, improved to 7-1 at the flight and 8-1 overall.
"This was an important weekend for us, and the team responded well,"Â Stetson men's tennis coach
Christophe Noblet said. "We are looking forward to building upon this by having a great week of practice to prepare for the challenges ahead."
Stetson is now 9-8 overall and is 2-3 in league play, currently sitting in a tie for fifth with their opponent Sunday, Jacksonville State. The 2022 ASUN Men's Tennis Championship will be a six-team, single elimination tournament held April 22-24 in Fort Myers, Florida.
Stetson has three league matches remaining and will host its final this weekend when facing North Alabama, Sunday (April 10) at 3 pm.
