Hatters Unable to Hold Off USF in 4-3 Loss

DELAND, Fla. -- The Stetson Hatters had plenty of chances on Tuesday night at Melching Field, but stranded 14 runners on base in losing to South Florida 4-3 in 10-innings.

USF (26-22) scored single runs in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings to rally for the win. Jarrett Eaton's single in the 10th drove home Jackson Mayo with the game-winner.

Sophomore Jonathan Gonzalez (4-6) took the loss out of the bullpen for Stetson (22-26). Joey Volini (2-0) was the sixth pitcher of the night for USF and got the win. Orion Kerkering closed out the game in the 10th for his third save of the year.

Sophomore Cole Stallings started for Stetson and threw six solid innings, giving up just one unearned run on five hits, with two walks and six strikeouts.

USF broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning, taking advantage of the only error of the game, a throwing error in Stallings on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Mayo delivered a sacrifice fly to score the run, giving the Bulls a 1-0 lead.

Stetson finally got on the board in the sixth inning after leaving the bases loaded in both the second and third. Kyle Ball got things started with the second of his three hits before Yohann Dessureault and Christian Pregent delivered consecutive doubles to put Stetson up 2-1.

Daniel Cantu tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth when he singled home Nick Gonzalez off Stetson freshman Dominic Stagliano, but the Hatters answered right back in the bottom of the frame when Cameron Hill delivered a two-out single to score Dessureault for a 3-2 Stetson lead.

The Bulls tied it back up in the ninth on a sacrifice fly before Eaton plated the winning run in the 10th inning.

Ball led Stetson with three hits while Dessureault had two. Eaton had three hits to lead USF.

The victory gives USF a 90-89 all-time series lead, but the Hatters will have a chance to draw even when the teams play again in Tampa next Tuesday. Before that, Stetson will play an important ASUN series at Kennesaw State this weekend while the Bulls travel to play at East Carolina.
