Stetson Rowers Bring Home Bronze, Silver from Dad Vail

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Stetson men's rowing team earned a pair of medals on Saturday afternoon along the Schuylkill River at the of the 83rd Annual Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta.
 
The Hatters Varsity 4+ crew took silver by posting a time of 6:34.487 in the grand finale, finishing just 4.822 behind La Salle, which was rowing on its home waters.
 
"I'm very proud of the work these guys have put in over the past several weeks," Stetson head coach Jamie Francis said. "Everyone performed to their potential this weekend, and that is all we can ask for."
 
The Stetson crew reached the finale by posting a time of 6:36.008 in its head race on Friday, besting crews from Washington College, Fairfield, Drexel and Pittsburgh. The Hatters also won their Friday afternoon semifinal race, posting a time of 6:38.642, defeating boats from Bowdoin and three Philadelphia area crews – Temple, Drexel and Villanova.
 
Stetson's boat was led by senior coxswain Walter Klein with a crew of junior Matthew Clendening, junior Dylan Robertson, freshman Charles Abrahams and freshman Griffin Fender.
 
Hatters' sophomore Kaden Bowles also medaled, finishing third in the singles grand finale with a time of 7:36.423. Bowles reached the grand finale by posting a second-place finish in his Friday heat race with a time of 7:25.591 and third in his semifinal race with a time of 7:33.304.
 
Stetson student Austin Hill, who is not a member of the varsity team, also competed in the open singles division, earning third in the second final with a time of 7:56.171.
 
Stetson's Varsity 8+ crew did not make it to the grand finale on Saturday, but did row in the second final, finishing fifth out of six boats with a time of 5:55.050. The Hatters' Varsity 8+ was led by sophomore coxswain Bennett Rossell and crewed by senior Grant Miller, junior Lucas Quinby, sophomore Isaac Choate, sophomore Matthew Franks, freshman William Hubbard, senior Gabriel Laverde, junior Vincent Leffler and grad student Campbell Cole.
 
The Hatters will close out their spring schedule June 3-5 at the IRA National Championship which is being held this year in West Windsor, NJ.
