Hatters Fall To UF in Physical Battle

The Stetson women's soccer team squared off with visiting Florida Sunday evening in DeLand, and battled the Gators in a physical contest that ended with UF taking a 3-0 victory.

Stetson fell to 1-1 on the year while Florida improved to the same record.

The Gators forced the action throughout the game, peppering the Stetson defenses with a total of 28 shots, including 11 shots on goal. Hatters keeper Sarah Grimmett battled to fend off the onslaught, but the constant pressure allowed Florida to score a pair of goals off rebounds in a muddled crease.

Florida's Anna DeLeon banged in the only goal of the opening half at the 24:28 mark. The Gators opened the second half with another rebound goal, this one by Sophie White at the 48:47 mark.

The final goal of the game came at the 76:33 mark against a fatigued Stetson defense. Alivia Gonzalez was able to convert with an assist from Lauren McCloskey.

Stetson managed just seven total shots against the Florida defense, with Gators keeper Alexa Goldberg earning four saves.

Despite playing just 39 minutes, junior Arianna Lombardi  had three of the Hatters' four shots on goal.

The Hatters will look to get back in the win column on Thursday afternoon when they host FIU. The Panthers lost their season-opener on Saturday to Mississippi State, falling 3-1. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
