THE LEAD
Coming off a tough loss to the Florida Atlantic Owls on Monday night, the Hatters will hit the beach as they will compete in the Daytona Beach Classic, starting the day after Thanksgiving. The Hatters will first face-off with the Dayton Flyers at the Ocean Center at 1:15 on Friday, Nov. 24 before taking on the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles at 3:30 on Saturday, Nov. 25.
INSIDE THE SERIES
This weekend marks the first time the Hatters will meet both the Dayton Flyers and the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech. The Hatters are no stranger to either conference, however, as they hold a 5-2 record against the A10 and a 6-2 record against the Ohio Valley.
SCOUTING THE HATTERS (1-4, 0-0 ASUN)
Stetson approaches the weekend matchups with an overall record of 1-4, having recently fallen to the Owls 50-39 on the road, as the Hatters still seek their first win away from the Edmunds Center.
The offensive charge for Stetson is led by Jamiya Turner, who maintains a team-leading average of 12.2 points per game. Turner showcases a 39 percent shooting accuracy from the field and a 75 percent from the free-throw line. Jordan Peete, with four starts this season, averages 8.6 points per game, shooting at a 47 percent success rate (15 of 32) and making 5 of 12 shots from beyond the arc. Peete and Tyra Myers share a team-high five made three-pointers while Khamya McNeal follows suit with four of her own.
Promise Keshi has been a key piece off the bench as she averages 5.4 points after scoring a season-high 10 points against FAU on Monday, including a pair of three-pointers.
Turner is also tied with Keshi for the team lead in steals, contributing 1.2 steals per game. Jaelyn Talley excels on the glass, leading the Hatters with an average of 8.4 rebounds per game. Following a season-high four assists in the loss to the Owls, Turner now leads the Hatters in passing while Myers and Keshi are tied for second with six apiece.
Treadwell, who pulled in 21 rebounds against High Point earlier this season, maintains a team-second most average of 6.6 rebounds per game. Notably, Talley is tied for 12th in all of NCAA in offensive rebounds with an average of 4.8 per game.
As a team, Stetson averages 55.2 points per game, as opposed to a conference third lowest points allowed (61.2), on 102-309 shooting from the field (33%) and 22-89 from three-point range. They exhibit a conference second-best free-throw percentage of 72.5 percent (50-69) and boast an ASUN fourth-highest 39.4 rebounds per game. Stetson has forced opponents into 82 turnovers and capitalized on them with 12.6 points off turnovers.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS (2-3, 0-0 A10)
Coming off a 7-21 season last year and a second-round exit in the A10 Championship, the Flyers entered the season picked 9th in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches Poll with 100 points.
As Dayton heads into Thanksgiving break, they carry a 2-3 record overall, including a recent home victory over SIUE. However, the Flyers face the challenge of a 0-2 road record this season.
Head Coach Williams-Jeter, in her second season with the Flyers and a background in coaching at various prestigious institutions, brings a wealth of experience to guide her hometown team.
Offensively, Dayton is averaging 69.0 points per game, but their defense has allowed opponents to score an average of 78.4 points. The team's shooting percentages are 39.4 percent overall, 21.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 73.4 percent from the free-throw line. Notably, the Flyers rank 26th in the nation in offensive rebounding, showcasing their glass cleaning abilities.
Key contributors to Dayton's success include redshirt senior Destiny Bohanon, leading the team with 11.8 points per game. Graduate student Mariah Perez adds 11.0 points and 8.6 rebounds, while junior Arianna Smith contributes with a double-double average of 10.8 points and 11.5 boards per outing. Smith is currently ranked sixth in all of NCAA with 5.5 offensive rebounds per game.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES (0-3, 0-0 OHIO VALLEY)
After a stellar 23-10 season that culminated in a Ohio Valley Conference Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Tennessee Tech Women's Basketball team entered this season as the favorites to clinch the conference title once again. The Preseason Coaches' Poll underscored their dominance, with the Golden Eagles receiving 16 first-place votes.
However, the team has faced a challenging start to the current season, currently holding an 0-3 record, including an 0-2 mark on the road. The losses came at the hands of Ball State, Chattanooga, and Alabama A&M, with the latter resulting in a close 62-56 overtime defeat.
Offensively, Tennessee Tech averages 55 points per game, shooting at a 39.2 percent clip from the field and a noteworthy 36.4 percent from beyond the arc. Leading the scoring charge is graduate guard Maaliya Owens, who boasts 12.0 points per game on 45.8 percent shooting, including a sharp 41.2 percent from three-point range. Owens also plays a pivotal role on the boards, grabbing 4.7 rebounds per game.
Graduate Yaubryon Chambers follows closely with 11.7 points per game, showcasing her efficiency with a shooting percentage of 65.2 percent. Adding to the team's double-digit scorers is sophomore Reagan Hurst, contributing 10 points per game. The team's offensive cohesion is further evident in their 13.7 assists per game, led by Cayla Cowart, who dishes out 4.3 assists per game.
Defensively, Hurst and Chambers spearhead the effort with 2.3 and 2.0 average steals, respectively.
