THE LEAD
The Hatters will hit the road once again as they head west to the Centennial State to face-off with the Denver Pioneers. Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9 at 3:00 PM at Hamilton Gymnasium in the Mile High City.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The two programs met for the first time ever last season on Dec. 2, 2022 when the Pioneers took the inaugural game with a tightly contested 62-59 win.
SCOUTING THE HATTERS (2-7, 0-0 ASUN)
Stetson approaches the weekend showdown with an overall record of 2-7 after dropping their last game on the road against #17 Indiana last weekend. Stetson looks to pick up their first win away from home before their homestand.
Leading the Hatters on offensive in their last game was none other than
Jamiya Turner as she finished the game with 11 points and six rebounds against the Hoosiers. It was sixth time this season reaching double-figure scoring and her fifth game with six or more rebounds.
So far this season, the offensive output for Stetson has been led by Turner, who maintains a team-leading 108 points, 12.0 per game. Turner showcases a 43.2 percent shooting accuracy from the field (41 of 95) and a 78.8 percent from the free-throw line, fifth best in the ASUN.
Jordan Peete, with eight starts this season, averages an 9.4 points per game, making a team-high 10 of 34 shots from beyond the arc.
Khamya McNeal and
Promise Keshi have been a key piece in the rotation as they average 8.2 and 5.5 points, the former hitting a pair of threes in her last outing.
Keshi leads the team in steals, contributing 17 steals, tied for fourth most in the conference.
Jaelyn Talley has excelled on the glass, leading the Hatters with 57 total rebounds, 6.3 per game. Her 31 offensive rebounds rank third most in the ASUN and she ranks tied for fifth most in total boards.
Skylar Treadwell has pulled in 53 rebounds on the season after grabbing 21 against High Point earlier this season.
As a team, Stetson averages 56.2 points per game, as opposed to a conference fourth fewest average points allowed (61.7), on 191-554 shooting from the field (34.5%) and 34-168 from three-point range. They exhibit a conference third-best free-throw percentage of 70.9 percent (90-127) and boast an ASUN fifth-highest 337 total rebounds, 37.4 rebounds per game. Stetson has forced opponents into 143 turnovers and capitalized on them with 14.3 points off turnovers.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS (1-6, 0-0 SUMMIT)
Denver enters the game with a current record of 1-6, sitting at the bottom of the Summit standings, most recently experiencing a 50-47 road loss to UC Irvine on Saturday to extend their skid to five games.
In the 2023-24 Preseason Coaches' Poll, the coaches voted Denver seventh in the poll with 233 points and a vote for first place after finishing the prior season with an 8-10 conference record.
Looking to build off of a 12-18 finish last season, the Pioneers average 59.4 points per game and have been outscored by their opponents by an average of 5.6 points. Their lone win on the season came against North Alabama in a 67-51 win on the road on Nov. 10.
As a team, they have a shooting percentage of 36.1% from the field (145 of 402) and 23.6% from beyond the arc (49 of 208). The Pioneers are rebounding at an average of 36.4 per game and distributing 11.9 assists.
On the defensive end, they allow opponents to shoot 38.6% from the field (160 of 415) and 27.7% from three-point range (33 of 119), fourth and third fewest in the Summit League. The defense has also forced 143 turnovers, scoring 14.3 points off them, while tallying 73 steals and 18 blocks.
Sophomore Guard Emma Smith, a Preseason All-Summit Secon Team selection, leads the team with a conference sixth-most 14.0 points per game on 37.4 percent shooting. Smith also leads the Pioneers with 23 total assists while grabbing 35 boards, 5.0 per game. Smith also leads the defensive effort with 19 steals while Makayla Minett leads with 12 blocks.
Sophomore guard Jordan Jones follows closely behind Smith, averaging 13.1 points per game so far this season. While making 31 of her 85 shots, she leads the team with 22 made free-throws at a 68.8 percent clip, 13th best in the Summit.
Senior Emily Counsel rounds out the Hoosiers' double-figure scorers as she averages 10.6 points per game, including a team-high 14 made three-pointers. Minett leads the Pioneers with 52 total rebounds, 7.4 per game, while pulling in 20 offensive rebounds, fourth most in the conference. Jones also averages 7.1 rebounds as she reeled in 40 defensive rebounds this season.
