Hatters Drop Road Game Against Denver, 74-52

Turner Hits Double-Figures for 4th Time in Five Games

DENVER, Colo. - The Stetson University Women's Basketball team took to the Mile High City on Saturday afternoon but fell 74-52 to the Pioneers as the squad still seeks their first win away from home.

Jamiya Turner led the Hatters in scoring with 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting as she tallied double-figures for the seventh time this season and the fourth time in the last five games.

The Hatters jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the opening minute as Quentarra Mitchell and Khamya McNeal hit buckets, the latter of the two was a three-pointer on an assist from Skylar Treadwell.

After Denver notched a basket, the Hatters responded with a 6-0 run, with four of those points credited to Mitchell, who also showcased her playmaking skills by assisting on a driving layup by Turner.

Interrupting a pair of Pioneer three-pointers, Jordan Peete added to the scoreboard with a three-pointer of her own. Following an 8-2 run by Denver that spanned five minutes, Treadwell widened the lead to six points with a three-pointer—her sole shot of the game. A three-pointer by the Pioneers in the closing 30 seconds of the opening quarter left the Hatters heading into the second with a 19-16 advantage.

The second quarter started with Denver embarking on a 10-0 run, halted only by freshman forward Diawna Carter-Hartley, who scored midway through the quarter to trim the deficit to five points.

In response to a Denver basket, Mitchell answered with a jumper before the Pioneers initiated a 9-4 run, with all four of those points coming from Turner.

Despite facing a ten-point deficit, freshman guard Anne Kunzwiler narrowed the gap by burying a three-pointer, assisted by McNeal, bringing it back to single digits. However, a last-second three-pointer from Denver extended the Hatters' halftime deficit to ten points.

The second half commenced with Jaelyn Talley notching her first basket of the night. However, Peete's fastbreak layup halted another Denver run that included two three-pointers.

Following another pair of three-pointers from the Pioneers, Carter-Hartley executed a tightly contested layup. Although she missed the ensuing free throw, McNeal stepped in for clean-up duty, making the tip-in layup.

Despite trailing 54-38, the Hatters staged an 6-0 run, with two successful shots from Turner and a pull-up jumper from Mitchell, assisted by Promise Keshi.

Denver interrupted the Stetson run with a basket in the final 30 seconds, leaving the Hatters trailing 58-44 as they entered the fourth quarter.

A minute into the closing quarter, Turner's coast-to-coast jumper cut the deficit to 12 points. However, a 10-0 run from the Pioneers, which included five free throws, extended their lead to 68-46.

Peete and McNeal added back-to-back three-pointers for the Hatters, but Denver secured the game with a 6-0 run to close it out.

While Turner led the team in scoring, Mitchell contributed a season-high ten points on 4-of-12 shooting, coupled with five rebounds.
McNeal and Peete each concluded the game with eight points, both sinking a pair of three-pointers. McNeal also achieved a season-high in assists, recording six.

Although the team was outrebounded 32-39, they showcased strength in the paint, outscoring the Pioneers 24-16. Talley led this effort with eight rebounds, four of which were on the offensive end.

The Hatters, now 2-7, will return home on Sunday, Dec. 17 to host Morgan State for Military Appreciation/Hometown Heroes day. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 2:00 PM at the Edmunds Center with all the action being streamed to ESPN+.
