Hatters Fall to Cornell to Open Stetson Invitational

Big Red rally late for a 2-1 win

DeLand, Fla. – The Cornell Big Red hit a pair of late home runs to down Stetson 2-1 Friday evening at Patricia Wilson Field.
 
The loss ended Stetson's five-game win streak. 
 
Stetson's Lauren Klein and Cornell's Mia Burd locked up in a good pitcher's duel as the game remained scoreless through the first four-and-a-half innings.
 
The Hatters (8-5) broke through in the bottom fifth when Alyssa Gilman reached on a one-out single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Kami Eppley, and scored on Brianna Clary's bloop single to left.
 
The Big Red (1-1) answered right back in the top of the sixth behind back-to-back home runs from Sydney Stapf and Ceila Macari.
 
Burd retired the last six in a row to preserve the victory.
 
Cornell outhit Stetson 6-5. Eppley and Gilman collected two hits apiece to lead the Hatters.  Klein struck out five over 5.2 innings of work.
 
Earlier in the day, Cornell fell to Presbyterian 2-0 in their season debut.
 
The Stetson Invitational continues Saturday with the following schedule:
9:30 a.m. UNF vs. Cornell
12 p.m. UNF vs. Presbyterian
3:p.m. Presbyterian vs. Stetson
5:30 p.m. Cornell vs. Stetson
