Hatters Down South Carolina To Open Spring Break Trip

Stetson notches first SEC win since 2006

Columbia, S.C. -- Brianna Clary went 3-for-4 at the plate and Lauren Hobbs went the distance in the circle as Stetson defeated South Carolina 4-3 Tuesday night at Carolina Softball Stadium.

The Hatters (12-5) earned their first win over an SEC opponent since 2006 (Florida) and improved to 9-1 in their last 10 games overall.

The Gamecocks (14-2) entered the contest on a 14-game win streak and had not lost since their season opener on Feb. 9.

"It was a great game," Stetson head coach Shellie Robinson said.  "We got the job done, coming in against a big SEC team.  Like always, we just want to compete, and we did that and more.  Great road win to start off our spring break trip."

Stetson fell behind 2-0 in the third but answered right back with a 3-spot in the fourth.  Clary led off with a triple and scored on a base hit by Evette Morgan.  Later in the inning, Haley Fox gave the Hatters the lead with clutch a two-out, two-run single to left.

In the top of the seventh, Stetson extended its lead to 4-2 when Clary drove in Alyssa Gilman with an RBI double. That gave the Hatters what proved to be a crucial insurance run as the Gamecocks cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the frame.  However, Hobbs retired Jordan Fabian on a liner to second to secure the victory.

USC came in batting .327 as a team and averaging nearly eight runs per game.

"They have a great offense, and they barreled up some balls, so for Lauren to keep them to only three runs, hats off to her," Robinson said.

Clary singled, doubled, tripled, scored a run and drove in a run to lead the offense.  Fox added two RBI for the Hatters.  Hobbs (5-1) picked up her fifth win of the year with a complete game effort.  She allowed six hits, walked one and struck out three.

The Hatters will now head to Athens, Ga. for the Bulldog invitational this weekend at the University of Georgia.

Notes: The Hatters have now posted five come-from-behind victories this season ... Stetson defeated South Carolina for the first time ... In the past seven days, Stetson has defeated a Top 25 team (#23 UCF), a 12-0 team (Presbyterian), and a 14-1 team (South Carolina) ... The Hatters are off to their best start since 2017.
