JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Hatter women's basketball overpowered Jacksonville with a gritty second-half performance on both ends of the court in a come-from-behind, 57-48, Saturday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium. The win caps off a weekend of ASUN road wins.
The Hatters (11-13, 5-6 ASUN) are winners of three of their last four games. JU (9-12, 3-8 ASUN) has lost three straight, all taking place in Jacksonville.
The Dolphins pushed in front early, scoring the first five points of the contest until
Khamya McNeal knocked down a three.
Jaelyn Talley tied it up [5-5] on the next trip down the floor. After the tie, both squads traded baskets until JU built a seven-point advantage, 16-9, with 2:24 left in the first.
Jamiya Turner earned three points off a basket and-the-foul converted from the free-throw line, but JU took a six-point advantage into the second frame.
The Dolphins found a shooting rhythm to start the second quarter and three minutes 26 seconds in, JU built a 12-point lead when JU's Seraphine Bastin knocked down a jumper making it 28-16. The Hatters started chipping away, with the occasional layup and free throw, with
Jamiya Turner cutting the deficit to three, 30-27 after a 11-2 run. Shynia Jackson knocked down a jumper giving the home side a five-point advantage, 32-27, into the break for halftime.
Jacksonville barely managed to hold the Hatters at bay as Stetson kept the game at one-possession following a jumper from
Jordan Peete to open the frame. At the 4:56 point, SU finally broke through with Talley making a layup [37-36 Hatters] off a pass from McNeal. Talley added another jumper to push Stetson in front. The Hatters took the fight to the Dolphins, ending the frame up five, 45-40.
Stetson's offense kept grinding out points as the Hats scored on four of the first five trips down the floor in the fourth quarter.
Jamiya Turner capped off the run with a jumper at the 7:27 mark [51-42]. The Hatters built the advantage to 10, 57-47, before the away team put the clamps on the Dolphins, holding the home team without a field goal for the final 5:17 en route to a nine-point ASUN road win, 57-48.
Talley paced the Hatters with 18 points, her 16th time in double figures in 23 games, while also grabbing a team-high 6 rebounds.
Stetson now faces the ASUN leaders, FGCU, twice in a 72-hour window, first on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., in Alico Arena in Fort Myers. The return contest will be in the Edmunds Center on Saturday at 1 p.m.
