Hatters Drop A Pair at USC Upstate

Spartanburg, S.C. -- Stetson (15-10) dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to USC Upstate Friday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium, falling 4-1 and 1-0 in head coach Shellie Robinson's return to her alma mater.

Lauren Hobbs (7-2) pitched the opener, allowing four runs through six innings of work. The Hatter southpaw did not walk a batter and held the Spartans (20-2) hitless over the final four innings.

Stetson collected five hits in the game, including an RBI single by Brianna Clary in the fifth that scored Alyssa Gilman. It would be the Hatters' lone run of the day.

Hannah Marien (5-3) delivered another impressive performance in the circle in the nightcap, allowing just two hits and one unearned run over 7.1 innings.

Neither team scored through the first seven innings, marking the second time in seven days the Hatters went into extra innings scoreless. With the international tiebreak rule in effect, Stetson was unable to cash in in the top of the eighth.

The Spartans, meanwhile, moved their runner to third with one out, and on a squeeze bunt attempt in front of home plate, third baseman Marissa Baxter scooped the ball and appeared to have tagged the runner all in one motion.  The Upstate runner was ruled safe at home, however, and the game ended as a 1-0 Spartan victory.

Robinson was an All-American catcher/outfielder at USC Upstate from 2012-2015.  She was inducted into the Spartans Hall of Fame in the Class of 2020.

The two teams will play the finale of their 3-game series at 1 p.m. Saturday.
