Marien, Hatters Blank USC Upstate 1-0

Hannah Marien tosses 3-hit shutout, while Annabella McClerren delivers clutch RBI single

Spartanburg, S.C. -- Freshman Annabella McClerren's two-out, pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the sixth inning helped lift Stetson to a 1-0 victory over USC Upstate Saturday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium.

Fellow freshman Hannah Marien (6-3) tossed a three-hit shutout in the circle as the Hatters (16-10) won the finale of the three-game series.

It was the second straight 1-0 game between the two teams and Stetson's fourth 1-0 game of the season.  The Spartans (20-3) lost at home for the first time this year (17-1).

In the top of sixth inning, Jordyn Stanfill got Stetson going with a single to left, and pinch-runner Jaela Haynes moved into scoring position with a first-pitch steal of second base.  With two outs, McClerren was called on to pinch hit, and after falling behind 0-2 and fouling off a couple pitches to stay alive, she rifled a line drive past the third baseman into left field.  Haynes easily sprinted home with the first run of the game and Stetson had its first lead of the weekend.

Marien registered a 1-2-3 sixth inning, but Upstate threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.  With runners at first and second and two outs, Denver Lauer blooped a single into short left field.  The Spartans waved the runner around third as Brianna Clary came up and threw a one-hop strike to Stanfill at home plate.  The Hatter catcher applied the game-ending tag to nail down the 1-0 victory.

Marien allowed just three hits and no runs while striking out seven en route to her second shutout of the season. She did not allow an earned run in 21.1 innings of work on the week.

Upstate starter Alyssa Kelly allowed just three hits in seven innings for the Spartans.

The game was Stetson's final non-conference tune-up before the start of ASUN play next weekend.  The Hatters will host Queens University in a 3-game set at Patricia Wilson Field beginning Saturday at 1 p.m.

Notes: The teams combined for just seven runs in the three games ... This season, Stetson has snapped Presbyterian's 12-game win streak, South Carolina's 14-game win streak, and USC Upstate's 22-game home win streak, dating back to last season ... Stetson now has two game-winning outs at home plate this season (both on 1-0 victories) ... Both of Marien's shutouts have come on 1-0 victories ... Stetson is 8-5 in one-run games and 3-1 in 1-0 games this season.
