Gonzalez, Bermudez Lead Hatters to Sweep of Owls

DELAND, Fla. - After the first two games of the Stetson Hatters' ASUN-opening series against Kennesaw State saw the Hatters and Owls combine for 31 runs and 47 hits, Sunday's series finale couldn't have been more different, as a walk-off home run from designated hitter David Bermudez gave the Hatters a 2-1 win. The win, Stetson's second walk-off of the series, gave the Hatters their first sweep of Kennesaw State since 2015.

Senior righty Daniel Paret started for the Hatters and allowed just one hit while striking out four through 2.2 innings of work, before junior Jonathan Gonzalez (3-2) came in and turned in a superb relief performance, allowing a single run on just one hit over the final 6.1 innings. He struck out three and hit one batter, retiring the final 18 batters that he faced.

The Hatters (14-8, 3-0 ASUN) would put the leadoff on in each of the first three innings, but were unable capitalize until the third, when shortstop Lorenzo Meola doubled off the wall in center field, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by center fielder Cameron Hill, and scored on a sacrifice fly from left fielder Evan Griffis to stake Stetson to a 1-0 lead.
After Kennesaw State (8-10, 0-3 ASUN) evened the score at 1-1 in the fourth, Stetson looked to respond in their half of the frame, loading the bases on a walk to first baseman Landon Moran, a single from catcher Christian Pregent, and an intentional walk to Bermudez, but the Hatters were unable to capitalize, stranding all three.

Pregent's single would prove to be the only hit for the next 4.5 innings, as Gonzalez and four KSU pitchers combined to allow just one base runner from the fifth inning to the bottom of the ninth. The game looked destined for extra innings, as the first two Hatters went in order, but Bermudez, who delivered the walk-off sacrifice fly in Friday's 6-5 win, worked a 2-2 count before crushing his second home run of the season to left field to give Stetson walk-off victory.

Stetson hits the road for four games during the upcoming week, traveling to Bethune-Cookman at 6:00 PM on Tuesday evening, before heading to Jacksonville to take on North Florida this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM on Friday night, 2:05 PM on Saturday, and 1:05 PM on Sunday.
