Hatters Complete Tripleheader Sweep Over Jacksonville

Stetson wins 3 thrillers on Sunday

Jacksonville, Fla. -- Stetson entered this weekend's ASUN series at Jacksonville needing at least a series win to improve its chances of qualifying for the ASUN Championship in two weeks.  The Hatters got that and more, posting two extra-inning wins en route to a tripleheader sweep Sunday afternoon at the Pruitt Softball Complex.  Stetson defeated JU 3-2 in nine innings in the resumption of Saturday's suspended game, then won 5-1 in nine innings in Game 2 and 3-2 in the finale to win three times in a day for the first time since 2008.

More importantly, the Hatters (27-25, 11-10 ASUN) moved into a tie for fourth place in the ASUN standings and can clinch a postseason berth with two wins over North Alabama next weekend.

Stetson's pitchers delivered a superb performance Sunday, holding the Dolphins (23-25, 9-12 ASUN) to just four runs on the day and five runs in the series.  Lauren Hobbs (14-10) picked up two wins Sunday, working the final four innings of Game 1, and after resting in Game 2, tossing a three-hitter in Game 3.  She fanned seven and walked none, and stranded the tying run at third in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Hannah Marien was also terrific in Game 2, allowing just one run on four hits over nine innings.

Stetson's offense, meanwhile, collected a season-high 13 hits in game 2, including a clutch 3-run triple by Kami Eppley in the ninth inning that broke the game open.  Jordyn Stanfill hit a two-run blast in game 3 that proved to be the difference in the game.

The Hatters did not trail the entire series and completed their first ASUN road series sweep since 2014 (Northern Kentucky).

Next, Stetson will host North Alabama in a 3-game series at Patricia Wilson Field. The teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Notes: Ironically, Stetson came into the weekend just 2-10 on the first day of conference series play but 6-0 on series day 2s.  So perhaps the Hatters caught a break when Saturday's storms pushed all three games against the Dolphins to Sunday.  Stetson is now 7-0 in series finales (all 1-run victories) and 9-0 on getaway day ... Stetson improved to 16-10 in 1-run games this year ... It is just the fifth time in program history Stetson has won three games in a single day.  The Hatters last accomplished the feat at home in 2008 with two wins against Presbyterian and one against Liberty.
