Box Score FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Stetson Hatters and Florida Gulf Coast Eagles found themselves locked in a hard-fought battle befitting of two of the ASUN's top programs on Sunday afternoon. The Hatters built an early lead befor ultimately falling victim to a late Eagle rally, dropping the game 11-8.
The Hatters (28-20, 16-8 ASUN) wasted no time on Sunday, plating three runs in the first on an RBI double from center fielder
Cameron Hill, a run-scoring error off the bat of catcher
Christian Pregent, and an RBI single from right fielder
Jayden Hylton.
After FGCU (35-12, 18-6 ASUN) got a run back in the bottom of the first, both pitchers settled in until the fourth, when Stetson again put up a crooked number, this time using RBI singles from third baseman
Drew Wyers, left fielder
David Bermudez, and Hill, and an RBI walk from shorstop
Lorenzo Meola to build a 7-1 lead after thee and a half innings.
A three-spot from the Eagles in the fifth cut the Hatter lead to 7-4, but Stetson got another RBI single from Hill to push the lead back to four, 8-4.
FGCU would battle back, scoring twice in both the sixth and seventh innings to even things up at 8-8, before a three-run home run in the eighth gave the Eagles their first lead of the game.
Pregent would reach on a one-out error in the ninth and move into scoring position on a balk, but that was all the Hatters could muster by way of a rally, as a flyout and a strikeout ended the game.
Hill led the Stetson offense on the day, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, and Wyers picked up his third multi-hit game of the series, going 2-for-3 with a double. He also drew a walk, drove in a run, and scored once.
The Hatters return to the MAC for their final three regular-season home games this weekend, continuing ASUN play against Jacksonville. The Hatters and Dolphins face off at 6:30 PM on Friday and Saturday and 1:00 PM on Sunday. Saturday will be Senior Night, with the Hatters taking the time to recognize a group of players (
