DELAND, Fla. - The Stetson University Men's Soccer team is gearing up for an exciting season as they prepare to unveil their class of 2023 signings. Each newcomer brings a unique skill set and an impressive track record, setting the stage for a promising and competitive lineup.
Last season, the Hatters demonstrated their competitive edge, finishing with an impressive record of 6 wins, 3 losses, and 7 draws, including a commendable 4-2-2 conference record. Building on this strong foundation, the addition of the class of 2023 signings promises to elevate the team's performance and propel them to greater success in the upcoming season.
"We are excited to welcome one of the most talented classes in my tenure to Stetson University. Jaime Ibarra and our staff have been meticulous about identifying, evaluating, and onboarding the correct fit for our program," said Head Coach
Emmett Rutkowski. "I believe this group epitomizes Stetson University and will help us compete for an ASUN Championship consistently."
First on the list of newcomers is
Ross Appolon, a dynamic defender from Montreal, Canada, whose international experience includes earning U15 and U20 caps for Haiti including the 2022 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. Notably, he was a part of the 2022 Canada Summer Games Champion squad, showcasing his ability to shine on the global stage.
Next up is
Javier Barbosa, a goalkeeper hailing from Palm Beach Gardens, FL. With back-to-back High School State Championships in 2022 and 2023, Barbosa's steady presence between the posts was crucial to his team's victories. With experience as a USL2 goalkeeper at Altitude Rush and as a former Inter Miami goalkeeper, Barbosa brings a wealth of talent and knowledge to the team.
Afonso Conde, a winger from Lisboa, Portugal, is set to add flair and creativity to Stetson's attacking play. His time at 1° Dezembro, where he exhibited his skills in 23 games, starting in 16 of them, and contributed 3 goals and 5 assists, demonstrates his ability to create opportunities and electrify the game.
Adam Elkhamissy, a determined defender from Duluth, GA, joins the squad with a winning mindset, having tasted victory in the Qatar Stars League U19 Cup and finishing as a Runner-Up in the Reserves category. With two MESAC championships to his name, Elkhamissy's defensive prowess will undoubtedly strengthen the Hatters' backline.
Jared Fuentes, a winger from De Leon Springs, FL, brings valuable collegiate experience to the team after spending time at Flagler College. With 35 starts in 48 matches and an impressive tally of 4 goals and 5 assists, Fuentes' attacking flair and recognition as a 2022 academic All-Conference player highlight his dedication both on and off the field.
Michael Kutsanzira, a midfielder from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, boasts an impressive list of accolades during his career at Washington & Lee University. With two United Soccer Coaches All-American and All-Region honors under his belt, as well as being named the 2022 ODAC Offensive Player of the Year, Kutsanzira's play-making ability looks to add to the Hatters' offense.
William Mills, a forward from Port St. Lucie, FL, adds to the Hatters' offensive force. Mills' participation in the 2021 National Cup Final and victory in the 2021 Regional Cup Championship further highlights his potential as a dynamic forward and his determination to succeed.
Nicolas Nava, a midfielder from Dallas, TX, adds versatility to Stetson's midfield. Nava's experience with FC Dallas in MLS Next, Xolos de Tijuana in Liga MX, and Real Aviles Industrial in 2a RFEF has shaped him into a valuable addition to the squad. Additionally, his selection for the U.S. U17 National Team Pre-Selection showcases his immense potential.
Owen Quincey, a defender from Coral Springs, FL, seeks to bring leadership to the team, having served as a three-year captain of South Florida Football Club in MLS Next. Quincey's invitation to the U.S. National Team Regional I.D. Camp and recognition in the 2022 MLS Next Best of Game are a testament to his commitment to excellence and will be vital for Stetson's defensive strategy.
Yonis Velasquez, a midfielder from Naples, FL, and Tampa Bay United of MLS Next, played a role in winning the 2023 USL Academy League and reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 MLS Next competition. Velasquez's midfield presence and championship experience make him a beneficial addition in the Hatters' lineup.
Last but certainly not least,
Haya Yoshizawa, a versatile midfielder from Tokyo, Japan, arrives with a wealth of experience from Montverde Academy. His time with OFC Barca and appearances at Georgia Southern add depth to Stetson's midfield options.
The Men's team is poised to take the field for the first time for their exhibition match against Daytona State this Friday. The team is eager to showcase their new talent and cohesive gameplay as they face off against formidable opponents before the official season begins on Aug. 24.
