CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Stetson University women's basketball team defeated the Austin Peay State Governors 51-42 on Thursday night at the F&M Bank Arena in Clarksville, Tenn.
The win was the Hatters second straight as they now hold a 4-2 conference record and 9-11 overall. After beginning the season 0-6 on the road, the Hatters have now won their last three road games. Additionally, the 42 points allowed by the defense was the lowest yielded to an opposing team since the 83-37 win over Webber International on Nov. 30.
"I was really proud of our defense, especially against a very good team on the road," said Head Coach
Lynn Bria. "We really played tough the entire game."
Leading the Hatters on offense in the victorious effort was
Jamiya Turner, who provided 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting. The redshirt-senior guard also added five rebounds and two assists to her final stat line. This marks her 13th game with 10+ points and her 11th game with 5+ boards.
After a low-scoring first quarter that left the Hatters trailing 9-8, Stetson combined to shoot 17-of-39 (43.6%) from the field through the final three quarters. Notably,
Khamya McNeal's last second layup ahead of halftime reclaimed the lead for the Hatters, a lead in which they would not give up.
On the defensive end, the Hatters tallied five blocks and 13 steals while forcing 21 turnovers. Stetson was able to convert defense into offense, scoring 21 points off of turnovers.
Four different Hatters recorded a block in the contest, including freshman forward
Diawna Carter-Hartley, who blocked a pair of shots in the start. Graduate forward
Quentarra Mitchell snatched six steals off the bench, a season-high and the most by anyone in a game this season.
Turner,
Skylar Treadwell and
Jordan Peete all grabbed five rebounds as the Hatters outrebounded the Governors 34-29 while the team also outscored them 32-18 in the paint.
Stetson will continue their road trip on Saturday as they head to the Music City for a date with the Lipscomb Bisons. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 3:00 PM ET at Allen Arena in Nashville, Tenn. All the action will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be available at lipscombsports.com.
