Mary McMillan Drains 5 Threes in 76-38 win over Edward Waters

Defense and sharp shooting lead to lopsided victory

DELAND, FL – The Stetson women's basketball team cruised to a 76-38 victory over Edward Waters at the Insight Credit Union Arena in DeLand on Wednesday night. The win marked the lowest point total allowed by the Hatters since their 83-37 triumph over Webber International on Nov. 30, 2024. Stetson's defense was stifling, and the team hit 11 three-pointers, led by Mary McMillan, who made five from beyond the arc. The 11 three-pointers surpassed last season's high of seven in just three games of the new campaign.

The Hatters (2-1) had three players score in double figures, led by McMillan with 18 points and four assists. Cameron Thomas added 15 points and two steals, marking double figures in all three games so far this season. Quentarra Mitchell contributed a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, her first double-double after 10 games in double figures last season.

Tiasia McMillan, who posted a double-double in her last game, was held to four points but grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists. Eva Bradshaw, Shelby Calhoun, and Cristina Gil Abad also scored in the game, with the latter hitting a three-pointer, all scored their first points as a Hatter.

Stetson's offense was particularly effective from three-point range, connecting on 11 of 36 attempts. McMillan led the charge with five triples, while Thomas and Jorah Eppley each hit multiple three-pointers.

Defensively, Stetson held Edward Waters to just 26.4% shooting from the field. The Lady Tigers also struggled on the offensive glass, collecting only eight offensive rebounds and scoring just nine second-chance points. Meanwhile, the Hatters grabbed 35 defensive rebounds.

Stetson opened the game with a 5-2 lead and then went on a 10-0 run, capped by McMillan's three-pointer, to stretch the lead to 15-2 with 7:51 left in the first quarter. The Hatters led 23-8 at the end of the first, relying on their long-range shooting, which accounted for 12 of their 23 points in the period.

The Hatters continued to build on their advantage in the second quarter, going on an 8-0 run starting at the 9:09 mark with Eppley's bucket pushing the lead to 31-9. Edward Waters cut into the deficit, but Stetson led 35-15 at halftime, with two more three-pointers in the period.

Out of the break, the Hatters extended their lead to 41-20 and then went on a 9-0 run to push the score to 50-20 with 5:59 left in the third. Though the Lady Tigers trimmed the lead, Stetson still held a commanding 59-34 lead entering the fourth quarter, with four more three-pointers in the final period.

Stetson continued to pull away in the fourth, pushing their lead to 64-38 before finishing with a 12-0 run. A jumper from Promise Keshi capped the run and the game, securing a 76-38 final score with 24 seconds left. The Hatters also capitalized on opportunities in the paint, scoring 12 of their 17 points inside.

The Hatters will now hit the road again but won't travel very far as they head to Orlando to face the UCF Knights on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 4 PM.
