Carrollton, GA – Stetson Volleyball earned their second conference victory with a sweep over West Georgia, Sunday afternoon.
The Hatters took an early 7-3 lead on a three-point scoring run and followed it up with a four-point scoring run to make it 11-4. Stetson capped off the first set with eight straight points, taking it 25-10.
The second half didn't start the way the Hatters hoped as they fell behind early. However, they continued to chip away and rattled off six straight points to take an 18-17 lead. The run included kills from
Kayla Balfour,
Jenna Simmons, and
Anabelle Standish. The score was tied at 18 and 19 before an ace by Simmons and block by Balfour pushed the Hatters ahead by two. Stetson would hang on to win the set 25-22 and take a 2-0 lead.
Stetson stared the third set by taking a 5-1 lead with stifling defense and strong attacks. They were able to push the lead to seven on a three-point scoring run which included two aces by Simmons. After two points by West Georgia, Stetson scored another three straight points with two kills coming from Standish. The Hatters would take the set 25-18 and sweep the Wolves in three sets.
Standish led the team with 13 kills followed by
Zuzanna Rut and
Leilani Vitale with six.
Elif Yasar tallied 27 assists in the win. Defensively, Vitale led the team with 15 digs followed by
Haruka Sugimoto with 13. At the net, Balfour led the team with three total blocks followed by Standish with 2.5 total blocks.
The Hatters will now return home to take on Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, November 9. That match will begin at 6pm.
