DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Stetson Hatters bounced back in the Daytona Beach Classic with a strong 84-76 victory over the Utah State Aggies on Saturday afternoon at the Ocean Center.
Cameron Thomas led the charge with a game-high 21 points, marking her third 20-point performance of the season. Six Hatters scored in double figures, showcasing a balanced offensive attack. Mary McMillan added 17 points and dished out six assists, while Tiasia McMillan contributed 12 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high four blocks.
The Hatters were sharp from beyond the arc, knocking down nine three-pointers on 21 attempts. Mary McMillan led the team's long-range effort, sinking three triples.
Defensively, Stetson disrupted Utah State's rhythm with six blocks, including Tiasia McMillan's four rejections, which set the tone for the Hatters' interior presence.
The first quarter was tightly contested, with Stetson trailing 19-17 heading into the second. The Hatters erupted in the second frame with a 16-0 run, sparked by Thomas, to take a commanding 33-19 lead. Seven of Stetson's 11 first-half three-pointers came during the second quarter, fueling a 50-33 halftime advantage.
Utah State chipped away at the deficit in the third quarter, but Stetson maintained control with a 62-58 lead heading into the final period. The Hatters capitalized on their defensive pressure in the fourth quarter, forcing five Aggie turnovers and converting them into six points.
A late 6-0 run pushed Stetson's lead to 76-68 with under two minutes to play, and the Hatters sealed the win at the free-throw line.
With the victory, Stetson improves its standing in the Daytona Beach Classic and will now hit the road to face the Iona Gaels on Thursday, Dec. 5.
