NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Cameron Thomas scored 16 points and Tiasia McMillan added 12, but the Hatters fell to the Iona Gaels, 58-46, on the road Thursday night. The duo combined for 61% of Stetson's points in the game, which marked their longest road trip of the season, traveling from Florida to the cold Northeast.
In addition to her 16 points, Thomas recorded nine rebounds and two steals, marking her third game this season with 10+ points and nine rebounds. She has now grabbed eight or more rebounds in four consecutive games. McMillan also came up one rebound short of a double-double, finishing with 12 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. Mary McMillan contributed six points and four assists, ending a streak of four consecutive games with five or more assists.
Stetson kept it close early, trailing 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. Thomas got off to a hot start, making her first three shots to account for eight of Stetson's 11 points in the opening quarter. The Hatters briefly led 18-15 after a 5-0 run, but Iona answered back to take a 27-21 lead into halftime.
The Gaels continued to build on their lead after the break, stretching it to 44-33 heading into the fourth quarter. Stetson scored all 12 of its points in the paint during the third period, but Iona's lead continued to grow in the final quarter.
Stetson made a push late, going on a 5-0 run capped by Mary McMillan's layup to cut the deficit to 51-43 with 3:25 remaining. However, Iona responded and sealed the game with a 58-46 final.
The Hatters will continue their road trip on Saturday, Dec. 7, against the Navy Midshipmen in Annapolis, MD, at 12:00 PM.
