Stetson Holds on to Defeat Central Arkansas 57-56

Move to 8-3 in Conference Play Behind Mitchell's 12 Points

DeLAND, Fla. - The Stetson University women's basketball team took on the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears for the start of the Double-Hatter weekend on Saturday night at the Edmunds Center. In a battle between two of the ASUN's top teams, the Hatters held on to win 57-56 for their sixth victory in their last seven games as they now hold an 8-3 conference record.

"They are a very good team, I'm just proud of our kids. We fought, we had a lot of adversity and we had to regroup," said Head Coach Lynn Bria. "We just had different people make plays from Jamiya to Q to Skylar and those two huge shots."

After dropping a season-high in last Thursday's win over North Alabama, Quentarra Mitchell again led the Hatters in scoring off the bench. The graduate forward provided 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting and for the second straight game she pulled in nine rebounds.

Khamya McNeal and Jaelyn Talley also reached double-figures in the winning effort, the former hitting a pair of three-pointers. In a game that featured five lead changes, the duo each tallied 10 points while Talley notably pulled in three offensive rebounds.

The Hatters saw contributions from six different scorers in the first quarter as they jumped out to an early 16-7 lead. The defense held the Sugar Bears to 3-of-15 shooting in the opening quarter and 0-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Despite Central Arkansas reclaiming the lead early in the fourth quarter, the Hatters would go on to stave off the Sugar Bears as Skylar Treadwell connected on back-to-back three-pointers late in the game. The senior forward finished the game with eight points while snatching seven rebounds.

"I'm so happy she took the shots and shot it with confidence," said Bria. "She was the player of the game, not just because of two shots but defensively, she was phenomenal. She carried us in the first half, rebounds, she's coming off the bench right now but she's a force."

Stetson finished the game shooting 23-of-61, 37.7 percent, while Central Arkansas shot 22-of-56 from the floor. While the Hatters only attempted 11 free throws, five of which were made, Stetson hit six three-pointers in the win. That marks the most three-pointers in a game since they connected on seven shots beyond the arc against North Carolina A&T on Dec. 19.

On defense, freshman guard Anna Kunzwiler blocked a shot for the third straight game and has now blocked six shots in a three game span. Jordan Peete came away with three steals, her fourth game this season with three or more steals. Also registering three steals was Mitchell, who also blocked a shot in the win.

Stetson outrebounded the Sugar Bears 41-36 as four different Hatters pulled in five or more rebounds including Jamiya Turner, who racked up seven. Both teams scored 30 points in the paint but the hatters scored nine points off of turnovers after forcing Central Arkansas into 14 turnovers.

Now 13-12, their first time this season above .500, the Hatters will hit the road for a three-game road trip starting with Queens University of Charlotte on Thursday, Feb. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM at the Curry Arena in Charlotte, N.C.
