DeLAND, Fla. - The Stetson University women's basketball team hit the road once again as they defeated the Kennesaw State Owls 64-54 on Saturday afternoon. It was the fourth straight win for the Hatters and their eighth win in their last nine games. The Hatters also remain undefeated in conference play when on the road as they hold a 7-0 record. Stetson now holds a 15-12 season record and a 10-3 record within the ASUN.
The Hatters were led in scoring byÂ
Jaelyn Talley, who provided 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. The sophomore forward added four rebounds, three of which were on offense, and three assists to her final stat line, the latter being a season-high.
Jamiya Turner and
Khamya McNeal also reached double-figures in the winning effort, scoring 13 and 11, respectively. Turner has now scored 10 or more points in 17 games this season as she went an efficient 5-of-7 from the field. McNeal, who hit a pair of three-pointers, was the only Hatter to hit a shot from beyond the arc in the contest.
Stetson trailed slightly after the first quarter, falling behind 15-14 but after the Hatters' defense limited the Owls to just nine points in the second, Stetson held a 28-24 lead at the half. The team would go on to outscore Kennesaw State 36-30 in the second half with 20 of their points coming in the closing quarter.
As a team, they shot 26-of-49 from the floor (53.1 %) including 8-of-15 in the fourth quarter, while going 10-of-15 (66.7 %) from the line. The defense has held opponents to 60 or less points on 14 occasions, holding a record of 11-3 in those games.
Although the Hatters were outrebounded 29-28, they dominated the paint, scoring 42 points below the basket. Graduate forward
Quentarra Mitchell continued to crash the boards as she led the team with seven rebounds while
Skylar Treadwell reeled in six of her own, both of whom came off the bench. The defense forced the Owls into 22 turnovers and turned them into 15 points on the other end.
The Hatters will return to action at 4:00 PM on Saturday, Feb 24 when they face the FGCU Eagles at the Alico Arena in Fort Myers, Fla.
