MARIEN GOES DISTANCE AS HATTERS DOWN WILDCATS

Saturday's Final Game Postponed Due to Weather

DeLand, Fla. - Pitching and fundamentals were the name of the game for the Stetson Hatters on day two of the Hatter Classic on Saturday afternoon, where a stellar pitching performance from righty Hannah Marien, six successful bunt attempts, and three stolen bases led to a 5-0 win over Bethune-Cookman.

The Hatters (2-6) struck early in the game, using singles and stolen bases from shortstop Addison Foster and centerfielder Kami Eppley, combined with a squeeze from designated player Briana Robinson to take a 2-0 lead after just one inning of play.

Marien (1-3), who allowed a single in the first before settling in, continued to cruise and the Stetson offense added on in the bottom of the third, when Robinson plated third baseman Gia Napoli with a sacrifice fly before left fielder Annabella McClerren laced a double just inside the third-base bag to drive in Eppley and push the lead to 4-0.

The pattern held for the Hatters, with Marien retiring six of seven batters in the fourth and fifth before the offense again added on in the odd inning. Eppley got things rolling, reaching on a bunt single and stealing second base before Robinson worked a walk. A sacrifice bunt from McClerren moved the runners over, before first baseman Marissa Baxter executed Stetson's second squeeze of the day, laying down a sacrifice of her own to score Eppley for the 5-0 lead.

That would be more than enough for the Stetson righty, who picked up the complete-game shutout after limiting the Wildcats to six hits while striking out seven on just 85 pitches.

Eppley continued her strong start at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 while scoring two runs and stealing a pair of bases, while Robinson drove in a pair of runs while drawing a walk and picking up RBIs on a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly.

Saturday's nightcap, which was set to feature the Hatters taking on the Creighton Blue Jays, was postponed due to rain. A decision on that game, as well as both currently scheduled for tomorrow is yet to be made.
