Stetson and Maryland were slated to face off on Friday, but their game was rained out after just three innings to play.
The two teams met again on Sunday afternoon. The Terrapins started the game off with a hit, but
Hannah Marien stranded that runner on third. Through the first three innings the line read the same as the first game between these two teams. The pitcher's duel continued until the bottom of the sixth inning when
Evette Morgan singled to right field and got the Hatters their first hit of the game. Stetson couldn't move the runner. Marien went 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh with some help from her defense.
Haley Fox made a beautiful diving catch in right field and
Michelle DiPuma followed that with a leaping snare of a line drive that was headed to the right center gap.
In the bottom of the seventh
Briana Robinson pinch hit and drew a walk.
Madelyn Synoracki reentered to run and stole second base. The Hatters once again couldn't advance the runner and the game was headed to extra innings.
Going into extra innings means each team got to start with a runner on second. Marien walked the first batter of the inning giving Maryland runners on first and second. The next batter hit a ground ball to short and
Addison Foster flipped it over to
Gia Napoli to get the force out at third. The next batter popped up to short. With two outs Maryland loaded the bases on an infield single. Marien was able to escape the jam with a strikeout.
The Hatters stranded their runner on third and game continued to the ninth inning. The Terrapins singled home a run in the top of the ninth but Marien limited the damage to one.
Stetson started the bottom of the ninth by putting
Nadia English at second as a pinch runner for
Marissa Baxter. Napoli laid down a beautiful bunt but the second baseman covering pulled her foot off the bag early. Naploi then stole second putting runners at second and third with no outs for the Hatters. Foster hit a ground ball right back to the pitcher and English was cut down at home. Foster stole second once again putting two runners in position to score. Synoracki worked the count full before hitting a rocket up the middle. The hit bounced off the pitcher and found its way into right field, plating Nappli and Foster.
Marien earned her third win of the season. She went the entire nine innings and gave up an unearned run on four hits, allowed one walk and struck out two.
Stetson will travel down to South Florida for a double-header on Wednesday, Feb. 28 starting at 3pm.
