Hughes and Meola shine in Stetson's 5-2 loss to Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Stetson University baseball team concluded their road series against Jacksonville with a 5-2 loss at John Sessions Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Logan Hughes and sophomore Lorenzo Meola each collected three hits, but the Hatters dropped the third game of the season as they fall to 13-8 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

Senior Daniel Paret got the start for the Hatters and took the loss on the mound for the first time this season. Senior Aric McAtee was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 5.1 innings, surrendering one run on two hits, walking two and striking out seven.

In addition to his three hits, Meola had a double to lead the Hatters. Hughes added two doubles and an RBI to his three-hit performance as well. Gio Cueto also contributed for Stetson, hitting a solo shot to left field in the sixth, his second of the year. The junior catcher has now racked up 23 RBIs while recording at least one RBI in 15 games this year.

The Hatters were trailing 5-0 in the sixth inning when they first put runs on the board. Stetson scored twice in the inning, including the homerun from Cueto. The Hatters were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

Despite the loss, the Hatters out-hit the Dolphins at a 9-6 clip. Stetson's pitching staff faced 35 Jacksonville hitters in the game, forcing 10 ground balls and four fly balls while striking out nine.

Stetson will return to action on Tuesday night as they take a trip up to the panhandle to face #19 Florida State at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 PM.
